How the tier system works

TierMeaning
T0The best against this boss. The characters to build a Dire difficulty clear around.
T0.5Close behind T0 here. The gap is usually the team around them, not the kit.
T1Clears this boss with a condition: a damage shortfall, or one of its mechanics working against the kit.
T2Viable here, but outclassed. Expect the rest of the team to carry a phase.
T3A niche pick, or a weaker stand-in for a character placed above.
TagMeaning
Expert −2Placed for expert play; counts two bands lower without the execution.
Expert −1Placed for expert play; counts one band lower without the execution.
ExpertPlaced for expert play; holds the band either way, but the ceiling needs it.
NewReleased this version; the placement is early.
FlexibleHas several strong teams, or supports many different carries; the placement does not hang on one.
High appApplies its element fast and often; the value is in what it enables.
DriverHolds the field so off-field kits can do their work.
ReactionThe value is in triggering a reaction, not in the kit’s own numbers.
CCGroups enemies; the value shows in content with several targets.
ComfortSimple to play, with sustain built in or little reliance on the burst.
PartnerAn on-field DPS that holds its band with one specific support, named on the tile. Swap that support and the team loses a large share of its damage.
MechanicCan use a mechanic specific to this boss: a faster shield break, a stall phase skipped, a resistance cut.
ShieldbreakBreaks the boss shield without the intended mechanic.
What this list isA placement by role at a stated constellation, against one boss, reviewed each version. It says who clears Overseer Device and how comfortably; it says nothing about the same character in the Spiral Abyss or the open world, which is what the Overall board is for.

Overseer Device tier list FAQ

6 questions

Why one list per boss?

Each Stygian Onslaught boss has its own shield, stall phase and resistances, and the mechanic that gets through them is tied to an element or an archetype. A kit that breaks one shield in seconds can do nothing to the next, so a single list for the mode would be wrong about every boss at once. The board for a boss ranks characters against that boss only.

What do Mechanic and Shieldbreak mean?

Both are tags that only appear on a boss board. Mechanic marks a character who can use something specific to this boss: a faster shield break, a stall phase skipped, a resistance cut. Shieldbreak marks a character who gets the shield down without the intended mechanic, through sheer application or a kit that happens to count.

Does the Overall placement still apply here?

No. The Overall board is about general content; a boss board is about one fight. A character can sit in T0 overall and T3 against one boss, or be absent from the boss board altogether because nothing in the kit answers the fight. The constellation each placement assumes is the same on every board.

How do I read a placement?

Each character sits in one of three columns (on-field DPS, damage support, or support and sustain) at the band their kit earns there. The badge on the tile is the constellation the placement assumes: C0 is quiet, anything higher is lit, and a character at C6 in a band is not a promise about the same character at C0. A character who does two jobs appears in both columns, sometimes in different bands.

Is this a score?

No. The placements are a judgement, reviewed each version against play in the content that rewards damage most; nothing on this page is a survey result and no band is a computed number. The character pages carry the kit data a placement was read from, so a placement can be argued with rather than taken on trust.

What do the tags under a tile mean?

Expert marks a kit that only reaches its band with the execution; the number says how many bands it counts lower without it. Partner names the one support an on-field DPS needs to hold the band. Flexible, Comfort and CC describe the team: several strong teams, easy play with sustain, or crowd control. High app, Driver and Reaction say where the value comes from: fast element application, holding the field for off-field kits, or triggering a reaction. New marks a release from the current version, whose placement is early.
